Fix Cracked Window Putty

Once dry rub down using a medium grade abrasive paper till smooth.

Press the epoxy over and into the crack with a putty knife. Work the adhesive back and forth across the crack gently. Replacing a broken pane in a modern insulated window is a task for a qualified glass repair technician. Apply the epoxy to the crack in the glass using a putty knife.

Window panes may also be held in place without the use of putty. Take care not to scratch the glass when rubbing down. Replacing the glass in an older single pane window is a project that may be within the capabilities of an experienced do it yourselfer but it s a complex job that requires removing the old putty and glazier s points removing the broken. Firstly remove all loose putty or flaky paint sand down and apply the filler using a filler knife.

On closer inspection i could see the glazing had cracked away from the window. This putty often lasts decades but over the years it becomes rock hard cracks and even falls off the window. Loose or missing compound lets wind and rain leak in around the glass. I still have all my original windows and don t ever want to replace them if i can avoid it.

I really love the looks of a true divided light window so when i had the house painted the painters re glazed the windows that needed new glazing. The only real reason to replace the putty is if it has become old and cracked or its integrity surrounding the glass has been compromised.
